The transformation of a former car workshop in Porto into a contemporary home by António Bessa Cruz Architects is a testament to the studio's ability to blend industrial heritage with modern living. This project, named Agramonte House, showcases a thoughtful approach to architecture, where the past and present coexist harmoniously.
The architects faced a unique challenge: the site's history as a car repair workshop and its proximity to Agramonte Cemetery. The original plan was to convert the workshop into a loft-style home, but structural limitations led to a complete rebuild. This decision not only preserved the site's industrial character but also informed the design's material palette and layout.
The resulting home is a masterpiece of contrasts. On one hand, it presents a blank, solid facade to the street, blocking out the cemetery's presence. Yet, inside, the space is open and airy, with a central living, dining, and kitchen area bathed in natural light from high-level windows. This contrast between the exterior's solidity and the interior's openness is a key feature of the design.
The choice of materials is deliberate, aiming to create a 'loft' atmosphere. Exposed concrete, steel-framed windows, and handmade bricks pay homage to the site's industrial past. Dark oak wood and glass partitions further enhance the industrial aesthetic, while also providing a warm and inviting ambiance.
The layout is a study in functionality and privacy. The L-shaped form of the house ensures minimal visual connection with the exterior, particularly the cemetery. The central living space is flanked by two warehouse-like glazed sections, opening onto paved courtyards. This design not only provides ample natural light but also creates a sense of seclusion and tranquility.
The interior design is a blend of raw industrial elements and modern comforts. The kitchen is wrapped in full-height dark oak cupboards, while the lounge area features exposed concrete walls and a modular grey sofa. The bedrooms and bathrooms showcase a mix of white brickwork, larger blockwork walls, and charcoal-painted surfaces, all contributing to the industrial theme.
Agramonte House is a remarkable example of how architecture can pay homage to its surroundings while creating a unique and functional living space.
